The Foundation

Margie Gillis had been a professional dancer for eight years when the Margie Gillis Dance Foundation was established in 1981. Her choreographic work centres on the exploration of the human experience, expressed through both the solo works that form the core of her repertoire and the group creations she has developed over time. Her “inside-out” approach to dance shapes her creative process and the interpretive work that has earned her international recognition.
The Foundation’s mission is to support and advance the artistic vision of choreographer and dancer Margie Gillis while contributing to the vitality of the arts community. The Foundation supports new creations, produces, and promotes the choreographic works of its founder, and supports the development of artists engaged in this lineage of practice, as well as artists of the Legacy Project.
The Margie Gillis Dance Foundation is based in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal), on the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk), a place that has long served as a gathering site for many Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabeg Nations.
